Training the trainer: organising writing sessions for your PhD candidates
As part of our Training the Trainer innovations, the Erasmus Graduate School for Social Sciences and Humanities (EGSH) organised an online crash course for supervisors about the Shut Up and Write method. This involves the organisation of collective writing sessions for PhDs and postdoctoral researchers (but staff can join of course).
The method is based on working together and mixing intensive writing with short breaks. For some participants the method was new, for others they recognised it from their studies. The group discussed at length if and how the method could be used in an online version as well. Experience so far with doing Shut Up and Write online are that it works well if the group members already know each other; the break periods need special attention and activities as the normal informal gathering around the coffee machine, evidently, are not possible online.
