"The War after the War: Communicating Justice in Post-Conflict Societies of the former Yugoslavia"

The destructive societal effects of armed conflicts last much longer than the war itself. In the aftermath of wars, post-conflict societies are faced with a series of challenges which revolve around the need to restore the rule of law, achieve at least some measure of justice for victims, re-build the ties between divided communities and establish the facts about war-time violence. In this context, divisions which existed during the war are often revived, as each side seeks to impose their own interpretation of the conflict and its consequences. The lecture will examine the crucial role that the media play in this process.

In the case of the former Yugoslavia, one of the key instruments in the post-conflict process of transitional justice has been the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), a court established by the UN to prosecute those most responsible for war crimes and mass human rights abuses committed during the wars in the 1990s. The lecture will thus also present the work and results of the ICTY Outreach Programme, which aims to communicate the Tribunal’s work and legacy to the people in the countries of the former Yugoslavia and make it relevant and constructive in the process of building a sustainable peace in the Balkans.
