In the sixth edition of Meet our PhD candidates, <link people melissa-vergara-fernandez>Melissa Vergara Fernández of the Erasmus Institute for Philosophy and Economics (EIPE) tells us about her research into the epistemic contributions of economic models.
At some point during her Bachelor’s programme, Melissa Vergara Fernández became extremely dissatisfied with economics. “For me, it was worrisome that I didn’t see much economics behind the mathematical derivation of models,” Melissa recalls.
She also started asking more fundamental questions: for example, about why we make certain assumptions in our economic models. Finding out about philosophy and the methodology of economics, she discovered that she wasn’t the only one having such thoughts: “It was dealing with exactly the kind of questions I was asking myself.”
