Quantitative data collection with a questionnaire

Methodology courses and philosophy of science

Course information

ECTS: 1.5
Number of sessions: 2
Hours per session: 4

This course is designed for people who have no or little experience with collecting quantitative data with a questionnaire. Learning how to do this is of great importance for everyone (from all disciplines) with an interest in quantitative research, especially researchers who are planning to collect data themselves.

Please note that this course is about data collection, not about data analysis. Although we will discuss how you can prepare collected data for further analysis, we will not discuss how you can do the actual analysis. Please find various courses on quantitative data analysis in our course guide (here) or via our course selector (here).

Course fee:

  • free for PhD candidates of the Graduate School
  • €525,- for non-members

Introduction

In this course you will learn how to use a questionnaire to collect quantitative data. A questionnaire is one of the most important and widely used quantitative data collection tools. It enables researchers to collect data about the backgrounds, behaviors and attitudes of relatively large samples of respondents in an efficient and structured way. Collected data can be subsequently assessed through statistical methods.

Aims and working method

This course comprises a mix of lectures, exercises, discussions and reflections. Participants will learn about all important theoretical and practical aspects of quantitative data collection with a questionnaire.

Learning objectives

After this course, you will:

  • Know what a questionnaire is and when to use it
  • Be able to design a questionnaire
  • Know how to present a questionnaire to respondents
  • Be able to evaluate a questionnaire
  • Know where and how to find respondents
  • Be able to prepare collected data for further analysis

Session descriptions

Session 1:

The methodology and design of a questionnaire

In the first session you will learn about the fundamental methodological aspects of a questionnaire (in relation to other approaches and tools for data collection) as well as how a questionnaire is designed for a particular research purpose.

Please bring a fully charged laptop to class. You may need it for exercises.

Session 2:

Collecting and preparing data

The second session focuses on the presentation / structure of a questionnaire, as well as how you can evaluate the clarity and functionality of a questionnaire. We will also discuss how you can administer a questionnaire and prepare collected data for further analysis.

Please bring a fully charged laptop to class. You may need it for exercises.
